چکیده

Increased rate of heat dissipation from electronic chips was explored by the application of flow boiling in mini-channel (D = 2.54 mm) and micro-channel (D — 510 \x,m) heat sinks with special emphasis on reducing pressure drop and coolant flow rate. A pressure drop model was developed that accounts for the single-phase inlet region, the singleand two-phase heated region, and the two-phase unheated outlet region. Inlet and outlet losses associated with the abrupt contraction and expansion, respectively, were also accounted for, and so were the effects of compressibility and flashing within the two-phase region. Overall, the major contributor to pressure drop was the acceleration caused by evaporation in the channels; however, compressibility effects proved significant for the micro-channel geometiy. Based upon practical considerations such as pressure drop, erosion, choking, clogging, and manufacturing ease, the mini-channel geometiy was determined to offer inherent advantages over the microchannel geometiy. The latter is preferred only in situations calling for dissipation of high heat fluxes where minimizing weight and liquid inventory is a must.

Two-Phase Electronic Cooling Using Mini-Channel and Micro- Channel Heat Sinks: Part 1 — Design Criteria and Heat Diffusion Constraints

Mini-channel (D = 2.54 mm) and micro-channel (D = 510 pm) heat sinks with a 1-cm heated surface were tested for their high heat flux performance with flow boiling ofR-113. Experimental results yielded CHF values in excess of 200 W cm~ for flow rates less than 95 ml min~ (0.025 gpm) over a range of inlet subcooling from 10 to 32° C. Heat diffusion within the heat sink was analyzed to ascertain t...

High flux boiling in low flow rate, low pressure drop mini-channel and micro-channel heat sinks

Due to the need for practical cooling technologies which could dissipate high heat fluxes, an experimental study of pressure drop and CHF in mini-channel (L) = 2.54 mm) and micro-channel (0 = 510 pm) heat sinks of 1 cm heated length was performed using R-l 13. Test conditions included inlet subcooling ranging from 10 to 32°C and a range of low flow rates up to a maximum of 95 ml min-‘. The test...

Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of low temperature two-phase micro-channel heat sinks – Part 2. Subcooled boiling pressure drop and heat transfer

This second part of a two-part study explores the performance of a new cooling scheme in which the primary working fluid flowing through a micro-channel heat sink is indirectly cooled by a refrigeration cooling system. The objective of this part of study is to explore the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of the heat sink. During single-phase cooling, pressure drop decreased with ...

Thermal Design Methodology for High-Heat-Flux Single-Phase and Two-Phase Micro-Channel Heat Sinks

This paper explores several issues important to the thermal design of single-phase and two-phase micro-channel heat sinks. The first part of the paper concerns single-phase heat transfer in rectangular micro-channels. Experimental results are compared with predictions based on both numerical as well as fin analysis models. While the best agreement between predictions and experimental results wa...

Measurement and prediction of pressure drop in two-phase micro-channel heat sinks

This study explores hydrodynamic instability and pressure drop in a water-cooled two-phase micro-channel heat sink containing 21 parallel 231 713 lm micro-channels. Two types of two-phase hydrodynamic instability were identified: severe pressure drop oscillation and mild parallel channel instability. It is shown the severe pressure drop oscillation, which can trigger pre-mature critical heat fl...
